The Pit Yard colliery opened in 1872 and it closed in September 2002 and has subsequently lain vacant. The railway line which operates between Monkhill and Castleford runs north-west to southeast through the site. The former colliery yard and washery site are located to the south and west of the railway line and form the site area for the proposals outline in the Pit Yard masterplan.
The Spoil Heap site lies North of the railway and is the former Cornwall open cast mine, which operated during the1970s and 1980s. Since operation the coal slurry from the Prince of Wales washery was pumped into the open cast pit and eventually rose above ground level by means of surrounding bunds. Wakefield Metropolitan District Council (LPA) recently granted planning permission for a full planning application for the extraction, stocking and removal of coal slurry (Application Reference: 06/01565/FUL) regarding land to the east of the adjoining railway (the former Cornwall open cast mine). The former Cornwall opencast site was accessed from Park Road, between the railway bridge and junction 32 of the M62 Motorway.
